About me

“I live a life of quiet desperation and my studio is the refuge where I use painting to unravel life’s confusion.”

I am a visual artist for a reason, so please take into account that writing about myself and my art is likely to be the inexpressive trying to express the inexpressible. I’ll try to give an honest insight without, I hope, being too pretentious.

I live a life of quiet desperation and my studio is the refuge where I use painting to unravel my life’s confusion and, hopefully figure out why some experiences distress, intrigue, or sometimes amuse, me. My life presents me with emotional and intellectual challenges and in an attempt to cope, or make sense of them, I try and come up with imagery that explores, or expresses, them. Unlike many realist painters, I don’t see things and want to paint them. The resulting imagery is therefore rarely illustrative, it is almost always metaphorical.

My process is essentially intuitive. I generate images for me that try to encapsulate something - I don’t exactly know of what, and importantly I don’t analyse what it might be. It isn’t that I don’t evaluate possibilities - I spend days choosing exactly what will be included in each painting (the ‘where and how’) but the choices are made on a purely "like/dislike" basis.

I don’t know how what I do relates to contemporary art and frankly I don’t care. My creative process is essentially therapeutic (and unquestionably self-centred in that I do it for myself - not to please, or appease, others).

I can only hope that it may provide you with the same stimulation and enjoyment that the arts provide me. My experience of life, in common with almost everyone, is unremarkable. Generally we share the same concerns and I hope my paintings contribute some insight by reflecting the world in which we all live.
